Symptoms of Sympathy

And why not?
Today I didn't feel well. (Don't worry this is so called 'figure of speach'.)
I went to the nearest GP, a bearded man in his early fifties. He took his time and some bloodsamples. I watched his face as it's expression changed, from polite and polished, to anxious and even frightened. When he grabbed his mask and plastic gloves I realised: I must have something serious, something infectious.
'You might want to sit down for a moment', he mumbled when he was done.
'Your illness is not unknown, but few people in the western world suffer from this condition. If this ailment would progress and become it's purest form you would have a lot of trouble to make yourself heard, you would eventually become mute. All the symptoms I've found with you... are symptoms of sympathy.'
Silence...
'Wha-what can I do?' My voice shivered like leaves in the wind.
'Live for yourself, don't care about others and whatever you do don't be friendly! Don't give your last pound to the homeless, don't open the door for a lady with a pram and never ever be polite!'
Mute... well, perhaps. But the mute can speak louder than many others. You don't have to speak to make yourself heard, words are just words. Imagine being in a room with 100 mutes; what would have more impact...your screaming and shouting, or their silence?
It doesn't make any sense...the world doesn't make sense...give it some thought though... it might add up.
